The Iraqi government has resumed the activities of key land border crossing points with Iran after shutting down operations temporarily due to enhanced security measures in the region. This involves the phased opening up of three key border crossings, namely Shalamcheh, al-Shib, and Mandali, under the guidelines provided by the Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi. The temporary suspension of entry into these border crossings was ordered due to security breaches in the region that had raised alarms regarding the launching of unmanned aerial vehicles in the vicinity of the borders.
The investigation prompted immediate administrative realignments within the defense structure. Despite the temporary restrictions at specific checkposts, bilateral commercial flow and passenger transit between the two nations remained active throughout the intelligence review. Alternative facilities, including the Zurbatiyah and al-Mundhariyah terminals, maintained uninterrupted round-the-clock operations to prevent supply chain bottlenecks. Similarly, the Bashmakh International Border Crossing inside the Kurdistan Region operated at full capacity, ensuring that trade movement, cargo transport, and traveler processing continued without delay.
Federal security commanders emphasized that the phased resumption of activity at Shalamcheh, al-Shib, and Mandali balances national security imperatives with vital regional trade dynamics. As border posts return to standard capacity under enhanced monitoring procedures, government agencies aim to safeguard national sovereignty while facilitating legitimate cross-border commerce across shared commercial corridors.
