Algerian karateka Cylia Ouikène successfully defended her Mediterranean title on Tuesday, capturing the gold medal in the women’s kumite under-50 kg division at the 2026 Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy.
The 22-year-old champion delivered a commanding 9-3 victory in the final over host nation favorite Erminia Perfetto of Italy. Ouikène’s tactical dominance and decisive scoring capped a challenging path to the top of the podium, which included a tightly contested semifinal victory against Egypt’s Reem Salama.
Speaking to reporters following the medal ceremony, an emotional Ouikène dedicated her achievement to the Algerian public and technical staff:
“Retaining my Mediterranean title here in Taranto after winning in Oran in 2022 was my principal objective for this season. The competition was incredibly intense, especially facing Erminia Perfetto on her home mat in the final. I stayed focused, followed our tactical plan, and delivered when it mattered most. This gold medal belongs to Algeria, my coaches, and everyone who believed in me.”
