Amman and Damascus have come to an agreement to set up a joint security committee that will examine the conditions under which the recent military operations in southern Syria took place, leading to the death of civilians.

This diplomatic move was reached during conversations between the Jordanian foreign minister Ayman Safadi and the Syrian counterpart after Jordanian bombings of IS (Daesh) sites. While Amman explained that the attack was necessary for the safety of the country, the military operations led to civilian deaths, causing outrage and condemnation by the Syrian government.

In the process of conversation, Mr. Safadi expressed deep regret over the death of civilians. He emphasized that the missions were executed based on precise intelligence regarding imminent threats stemming from regional extremist networks. The newly formed security committee will focus on investigating the operational repercussions, enhancing intelligence-sharing protocols, and preventing future friction along the shared frontier.

Middle East dispute

The cross-border tensions follow an intensive security crackdown by Amman prompted by a high-profile extremist attack inside Jordan. Jordanian security forces have been on high alert to dismantle sleeper cells and cut off logistical lines utilized by militant factions operating in southern Syrian governorates.

To address long-term regional instability, the bilateral panel will also assess broader border surveillance mechanisms and counter-smuggling protocols. Heightened vigilance along the desert border remains critical as both governments attempt to curtail organized illicit trade and prevent rogue armed factions from exploiting porous border corridors for illicit cross-border movements.

Despite the tactical friction caused by the recent bombardments, both foreign ministries underscored the enduring strategic and historical ties binding the two neighboring nations. Officials from both sides reaffirmed that safeguarding regional stability, respecting state sovereignty, and protecting civilian lives remain paramount priorities. The joint committee is expected to commence its review immediately to foster greater operational transparency and strengthen bilateral cooperation against mutual security threats.
