Najaf Airport Halts Flights to Iran as U.S. Sanctions Pressure Mounts

Authorities operating from Najaf International Airport have put an indefinite ban on both incoming and outgoing commercial flights linking the Iraqi airport with Iran. The operational ban took effect on September 25 at 2:00 am, according to orders received from top-level government officials in Baghdad, thereby bringing all commercial flight operations between the two countries to an abrupt halt.

The travel ban is a result of threats made by the U.S. government regarding imposing secondary sanctions against Iran’s commercial aviation industry. On September 8, the U.S. The Department of the Treasury amended its sanction lists to include 36 organizations that operate within the Iranian aerospace industry, which are accused of supplying aircraft, specialized spare parts, and other support services to Iranian airlines.

Washington subsequently issued severe warnings to regional air transportation hubs, stating that any airport providing ground handling services, refueling, or landing facilities to sanctioned Iranian operators would risk exposure to punitive financial measures.

This operational shutdown in Najaf follows similar enforcement actions taken across the regional transport sector. Earlier in the week on September 22, civil aviation regulators in Baghdad ordered an identical suspension of Iranian commercial flights arriving at Baghdad International Airport. Iranian transportation officials had initially attempted to bypass the blockade in the capital by rerouting scheduled passenger routes through Najaf’s air terminal. However, coordinated oversight by federal regulators in Iraq has effectively closed off secondary regional pathways for Iranian carriers.

Airport management in Najaf confirmed that operating teams will maintain continuous communication with international carriers and station managers regarding the status of air corridors. Officials noted that formal notifications will be distributed if operational guidelines are updated by higher authorities in the future.

The diplomatic and financial measures have increasingly isolated Iranian airlines from international airspace, with neighboring regional hubs, including those in the United Arab Emirates, taking similar regulatory measures to restrict non-compliant flight operations under expanded global sanctions guidelines.
